16 Nov Is it Alzheimer’s? Free memory tests can help you tell
Do you or someone you know have trouble remembering the names and faces of familiar people? Are there behavioral changes, like being more angry than usual or making poor choices?
A free and confidential memory screening can help sort out whether these are normal behaviors or something more serious — and is available across South Florida this month through a national initiative sponsored by theAlzheimer’s Foundation of America. Locations doing screenings by appointment include hospitals, memory research clinics and home health agencies in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s or related dementias, including a half-million Floridians. While there is no cure for the devastating neurological disorder, experts say early intervention can get patients on treatments that can slow its progression.
“The intent is to start a conversation about memory concerns,” said foundation executive vice president Carol Steinberg. “We find Americans just aren’t talking about it.”
