Polk Residents Nominated for Florida’s Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award

ive Polk County senior citizens have been nominated to be Florida’s Outstanding Senior Volunteer.

Seventy-six Florida nominees have been selected for the annual Salute to Seniors program, sponsored by the Home Instead Senior Care network.

The program honors outstanding seniors ages 65 and older who have contributed more than 15 hours a month volunteering within their communities.

“These people are all retired, but yet they choose time in their retirement to give back to the community and try to make Polk County a better place to live,” local Home Instead Senior Care franchise affiliate Temi Charrier said.

The nominees can be viewed and voted for on SalutetoSeniorService.com from now through April 30.

These are the five Polk County nominees:

Jean Berken from Lakeland is a gerontologist who joined the Florida SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) program at West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging Inc., where for nearly four years she has helped thousands of elderly and disabled Medicare beneficiaries select the plan that provides them the most benefits for the lowest cost.

She has been recognized with the 2011 SHINE Volunteer of the Year Polk County award and has been named SHINE local coordinator in Polk County.
