23 May State needs to improve access to trauma care for more Floridians
Legislation debated and passed in the final two weeks of Florida’s session concerning access to trauma care triggered a broader public discussion about the allocation of trauma centers in our state and how they may be best positioned to save the lives of those who are acutely injured.
A trauma center is much more than just an emergency department. It includes increased capabilities to treat the most severely injured patient, both in terms of equipment and immediately available surgical and medical specialists.
Evidence shows injured patients are between 20 percent and 25 percent more likely to survive serious injury if they are rapidly treated at a trauma center.
