27 May Villages nursing home bill on Governor Rick Scott’s desk
Hundreds of golf carts are parked along the streets of “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown” — The Villages.
The Villages is a community which spans parts of Sumter, Marion and Lake Counties, and is a place thousands of aging Americans are choosing for retirement.
“My husband and I looked all over the state and The Villages was the place that had everything,” Villages resident Dian Wilson said.
Everything but enough nursing homes, according to State Representative Marlene O’Toole of Lady Lake.
“We had a severe shortage of skilled nursing facilities,” O’Toole said.
That’s why she helped create House Bill 1159.
Part of the bill makes it easier for places around the state like The Villages to open up nursing homes. Right now, there are strict state laws in place when it comes to building and operating nursing homes.
