01 Jun Head of health department retires after 29 years
Dr. Nathan Grossman’s plan for his last day on Friday as director of the Marion County Health Department was to place a silver bullet on his desk for his replacement to find.
The item would have been a reference to the “Lone Ranger” television character and his silver bullet calling card.
“Who was that masked man?” Grossman said following a farewell ceremony Thursday at the department. “You don’t go into public health for the recognition.”
As long as the Health Department did its job, “most people didn’t know we were here,” Grossman said.
But after 29 years of having Grossman at the helm, thousands of patients without money to see private doctors or patients needing public health service have benefitted from his low-profile endeavor to bring health care to Marion County’s poor and needy population.
