Family donates $250k to diabetes research

Thanks to a $250,000 donation from a Winter Park family, Central Florida is closer to having its first research chair for Type 1 Diabetes.

The von Weller family made the donation this month to the Florida Hospital-Sanford-Burnham Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes. With von Weller’s donation, the hospital is halfway to its goal of $1 million, which will be used to endow research.

The new position will help attract the best and brightest clinical researchers to the TRI and Florida Hospital, said Dr. Steven Smith, scientific director of the institute.

Although 3 million Americans have Type 1 Diabetes, little research is conducted on the disease in Central Florida. More focus is given to research on Type 2 diabetes in part because type 2, unlike type 1, is usually the result of lifestyle habits.
