Fighting breast, ovarian cancer

Following actress Angelina Jolie‘s recent revelation that she underwent a prophylactic mastectomy, early detection of breast cancer has been underscored.

One of the leaders in the fight against breast cancer is Sharsheret, Hebrew for “chain,” a national non-profit organization that supports young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, who are facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Its mission is to offer a “community of support” to women diagnosed with breast cancer, or at increased genetic risk, by fostering culturally-relevant individualized connections with networks of peers, health professionals and related resources.

“Angelina Jolie’s decision to go public about her experience, and to bring the issues of hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer to the forefront, presents a unique opportunity for Sharsheret to educate the Jewish community about genetic mutations that to date have received little attention,” Rochelle Shoretz, Sharsheret founder and executive director said.
