Governor bestows medals on dozens of veterans in St. Augustine

Gov. Rick Scott was in town Thursday to honor veterans at the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans Nursing Home on Florida 16.

Scott arrived along with Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, retired Col. Mike Prendergast, executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and Maj. Gen. Emmett R. Titshaw Jr., the adjutant general of Florida.

“I’m very appreciative that individuals are willing to put their lives on the line for our freedom,” Scott said to the room full of veterans.

He spoke about one local veteran in particular: retired U.S. Army Col. George “Ed” Taylor, who served for 30 years including multiple combat tours. Taylor watched from the front row.

Silver and Bronze stars and a Purple Heart are among the medals he earned. He also won the Soldier’s Medal for preventing an explosion during the Vietnam War, Scott said.
