Ready, set, seniors start shopping for Medicare plans

Opening day of enrollment in Medicare Advantage and stand-alone prescription plans started on schedule Tuesday, despite the federal shutdown.

But there was one fact missing for elder early birds who were starting their 2014 healthcare coverage planning: what next year’s traditional Medicare premiums and co-payments will be.

That number usually is released in early October, before the details of the Medicare Advantage HMO-style coverage offered by private insurers are finalized and placed on Medicare’s online Plan Finder. Representatives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services did not say Tuesday what caused the delay.
