02 Dec Space-age device illuminates veins for easy ‘sticking’
Looking like something out of “Star Wars,” a new handheld gadget is saving South Florida patients from multiple sticks of the needle.
The AccuVein and its competitor, the VeinViewer Flex, use infrared or near-infrared technology designed to make veins glow, giving nurses a clearer road map and greater accuracy. For elderly patients with thinning veins and the needle-phobic, especially children, they’re making a “huge difference,” area medical professionals say.
“A lot of elderly patients, their veins are hard to find because many don’t stay hydrated the way they need to,” said Ruth Schwarzkopf, chief nursing officer at West Boca Medical Center, which uses the AccuVein. “So this is a good tool to use.”
