24 May Chikungunya arrives in Florida
The Florida Department of Health announced on May 16 that it has been notified of three imported cases of chikungunya, a mosquito borne illness epidemic in the Caribbean. This marks the first time that the illness has appeared in the continental U.S. from the Caribbean though an imported case was reported from the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier in the week. The three patients, all women, had returned from separate travel to the Caribbean recently.
The most recent large chikungunya outbreak has been in Haiti, where the number of confirmed cases has grown from 14 to 632 in one week.
