13 Oct Health officials confirm 1st enterovirus case in Florida
The state Department of Health has confirmed the first Florida case of a severe respiratory illness affecting children around the country.
Officials said Tuesday that a 10-year-old Polk County girl continues to recover from enterovirus 68.
The girl was treated at Tampa General Hospital over a month ago but was not officially diagnosed until this week because test results take weeks to be finalized.
The virus causes cold and flu-like symptoms and is considered highly contagious. In infants and young children, the virus can cause difficulty breathing.
