Six Polk Nursing Homes Get Top Ranking

Six Polk County nursing homes are among U.S. News and World Report’s Best Nursing Homes 2013. They are the ones with five stars, the federal government’s top ranking.

Alphabetically, they are:

Crossroads, 60 beds, 206 W. Orange St., Davenport.

Florida Presbyterian Homes Porter-McGrath Health Center, 48 beds, 909 Lakeside Ave., Lakeland.

Highlands Lake Center, 179 beds, 4240 Lakeland Highlands Road, Lakeland.

Manor at Carpenters, 72 beds, 1001 Carpenters Way, Lakeland,

Palm Garden of Winter Haven, 120 beds, 1120 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven.

Rohr Home, 60 beds, 2120 Marshall Edwards Drive, Bartow.

Each accepts Medicare and Medicaid patients in addition to those who are private pay.

They range in size, location and ownership.

What sets them apart from those with lower rankings?

For Marie Kamara, administrator at Crossroads, it’s having the right attitude.

“You have to love what you do, which is what we do every day,” Kamara said.

“We’re here to serve our residents … It’s not our home. It’s theirs … It’s like family.”
